Dr. Karen Liu

 

 

  Karen Liu is Principal Analyst at Ovum, covering advanced optical components. In her decade as an analyst, she has also looked at a broad range of other emerging technologies and market dynamics issues in high bandwidth communications markets. Prior to joining Ovum, Karen architected DWDM networking products at Tellabs and IBM. Karen received a PhD in applied physics from Stanford University in the field of fiber optics, and a BSE in mechanical engineering from Princeton University.

 

 

 

Dr. Tiejun Xia

 

Title: High Speed and High Capacity Optical Transport Network Technology

Abstract: It take a long way for the telecom industry to reach the stage that 100-Gb/s becomes the norm of channel speed of optical transport networks. It would not have happened without countless efforts of technology advancements in R&D labs. For global networking service providers the current focus at optical transport layer is still on how to provide enough bandwidth and connection flexibility to meet the demand of high Internet traffic growth and to lower the cost transmitting data bits. Beyond 100-Gb/s, 400-Gb/s and 1-Tb/s are on horizon line. That provides new challenges and opportunities to those technology developers who are working in the field. 

 

 

 

Tiejun J. (TJ) Xia, PhD, is an expert of photonic technologies and optical fiber communications in research, development, and technology innovations. He currently is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Verizon where he is responsible for optical network technology development. He also is an Adjunct Professor at Miami University in Ohio and was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas from 2005 through 2009. He has served on technical program committees for OFC/NFOEC, APOC, ACP, OECC, LOIS and other conferences. He also serves on the executive board of IEEE Dallas Section. Dr. Xia has a Ph.D. degree in physics from CREOL (Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers) at the University of Central Florida, an M.S. degree from Zhejiang University, China, and a B.S. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China. Dr. Xia has published more than 100 technical papers, three book chapters, and holds more than 70 granted or pending U.S. patents. He is a Fellow of OSA. In 2011, he was featured as a “Verizon Innovator” on YouTube. He is the winner of Professional Achievement Award of UCF in 2013.

 

 

 

Dr. Cedric F. Lam

 

Title: Next Generation Fiber Access Network & Technologies

 

Abstract:   The Internet has become an indispensible part of our modern society.   Many countries have long realized that broadband access systems are important infrastructure to unleash the power of Internet and to propel economic growth and prosperity. Companies are foraying into new technologies for next generation broadband systems. In this talk, we review the content driven Internet transformation and Google’s effort to deploy 1Gbps access speed to end users in North America. We will review next generation FTTH architectures and the technology options to realize scalable next generation FTTH networks.

 

Cedric F. Lam Dr. Cedric F. Lam (林峯) is currently Tech Lead and Manager at Google. He manages the Platforms Group of Google Fiber to develop scalable and cost-effective next generation FTTH technologies to fulfill Google’s mission of deploying 1 Gb/s access to broadband customer. Before joining Google, Dr. Lam was Chief System Architect at Opvista which made ultra-high density WDM transport systems. Prior to Opvista, Dr. Lam was Senior Technical Staff Member at AT&T Labs, Broadband Access Research Department.  Dr. Lam has a PhD from UCLA and B. Eng. (First Class Honors) from University of Hong Kong, both in Electrical Engineering. His current interests include broadband access network architectures, technologies, and datacenter networking.

 

 

 

Dr. Yiran Ma

 

Title: 100G Current Status, Views of Beyond 100G and Transport SDN 
Abstract: The content of the talk will generally cover three aspects: 100G current status, views of beyond 100G and transport SDN. Dr. Ma's idea is that the key technology of beyond 100G are multi-carrier for high capacity and transport SDN for easier management.

 

2.jpg Yiran Ma received the Ph.D. degree from National ICT of Australia, the University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia. In 2010, he joined China Telecom Beijing Research Institute and is responsible for transport and access networks. His current research interests include long haul high capacity transmission systems, next generation PON systems, SDN enabled transport and access networks.

 

 

 

Mr. Jimmy Yu

 

Title: Optical transport market overview

Abstract: The presentation will outline the current state of the optical transport equipment market, and give highlights from a recently published Dell’Oro Group forecast.  Areas of discussion will include optical vendor landscape, market size, and future growth.

Jimmy Yu re-joined Dell’Oro Group in 2008 and is responsible for the Microwave Transmission, Mobile Backhaul, and Optical Transport market research programs. Mr. Yu originally joined Dell’Oro Group in 2001, and spent over four years as the primary analyst for Dell’Oro Group’s Optical Transport program and built our coverage of the PON market. In 2006, Mr. Yu joined Spansion, a leader in flash memory solutions, where he was a Strategic Product Marketing Manager for Spansion’s server memory subsystem product line. Prior to joining Dell’Oro Group in 2001, Mr. Yu worked for Deloitte Consulting in the strategy and operations group as a Management Consultant with a focus in the high-tech industry.

 

Mr. Yu began his career in Northrop Grumman’s space technology group, where he was a lead mechanical engineer developing satellite communication subsystems and components, such as transceivers. While at Northrop Grumman, he also developed advanced packaging approaches for millimeter wave RF semiconductors, circuit boards, fiber optics, and photonics. He is a recognized authority in the Optical Transport Market and has written articles in various industry magazines such as Lightwave. He is frequently quoted in publications such as BusinessWeek, Converge! Network Digest, Dallas Business Journal, Network World and Xchange.

 

Mr. Yu received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Davis and an M.B.A. in General Management with an emphasis in Corporate Strategy and Finance from the University of Michigan
